Day 134: Mr. Jones

What I'm watching today

Mr. Jones (2020, Google Play streaming) - This is a movie with a powerful message about the horrific conditions that Stalin imposed on Ukraine in order to prevent the Great Depression of the 1930s from affecting Moscow. In effect, Stalin starved Ukraine to feed Moscow, and millions of people died because of it. The movie follows titular Mr. Jones former foreign advisor to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom as he secretly travels into Ukraine to retrace his mother's steps as a teacher in Ukraine 20 years prior. Jones accidentally discovers the atrocities and then attempts to document them and alert the rest of the world. Unfortunately the world didn't want to know the truth about Ukraine and instead of heeding Jones' warnings and intervening, the British government and press launch a campaign to discredit Jones. This movie is dark but necessary. At the same time, the film waters down some of the horrific and violent scenes. Sure there are truly horrifying moments: children everywhere left to fend for themselves, mystery meat, collectors of the dead throwing a living baby with no chance of living onto the heap of corpses, and so on. This is a good but not great movie that needed to be made a generation ago.

What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
