What I'm listening to today
Monsters Among Us (2020, podcast) - Derek Hayes hosts this call-in show about the supernatural that allows regular folk like you and me to report our experiences to...someone...no matter how unbelievable or mundane the experiences may be. I listen as the skeptic, and attempt to apply logic and reason to the tall tales, and most of the time there is a simple explanation for each story. Derek does the same, and tries to explain away each account, and if he can't he categorizes the story based on appropriate supernatural taxonomy. Quite frankly, many of the stories are dumb, but every once in a great while someone calls in to relay something truly weird, and I'm hooked. Lastly Derek Hayes has the greatest voice in the business, and after a single listen I'm sure you'll agree.
What I'm watching today
The Last Dance (2020, Netflix streaming) - This documentary series chronicles the Chicago Bulls in the last days of Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, and Phil Jackson. Documentary film crews followed the team for their final season together en route to their sixth NBA championship. Along the way the films describe how each person came to be a part of the team, starting from youth, and present the history of the Bulls organization from their woeful beginnings to the glory days of Michael Jordan. The series is brilliant, but it is not without flaws. For one the series is overly critical of Scottie Pippen, painting him as greedy when attempting to renegotiate his salary to one more commensurate with his amazing abilities. (Meanwhile Jordan was earning $30+ million for a single season.) The film is also way to apologetic for Dennis Rodman's antics that season. Rodman was one of my favorite players, but his actions did not have the team's best interests at heart. I'm half way through this show, and I can't wait to devour the second half. So far it has allowed me to rehash great memories and share them with the people around me. Memories of one of the greatest basketball teams ever assembled. I noted that I watched most of this series with a smile on my face.
