Day 126: Time for baseball

What I'm watching today

Palm Springs (2020, Hulu streaming) - Are there any two people cuter than Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti? Answer: no. The two meet at a wedding that Samberg's character Nyles has been living over and over again, stuck in an infinite time loop (that you may have heard about.) When Milioti's Sarah accidentally gets sucked into the same time loop, the two venture on a journey of existential discovery. Throw in some lessons about life, love, and adventure. This is basically a better version of Groundhog Day, but I'll allow it. It's funnier and more heartwarming, and it even throws sci-fi fans a bone by working in some quantum physics. There are no surprises here, as the plot goes through the typical three acts of a rom-com, but the jokes are fresh and the hard takes on depression are also real. There is even a JK Simmons cameo to boot.

What I'm doing today

Throwing - Out of nowhere the 8yo came up to me and asked me if I would teach him how to throw and catch a baseball. We dug his glove out of the toy bin, found a ball, and ventured out to the back yard. The kid has gotten pretty good at throwing a football, but hasn't really thrown a baseball before. It showed as he more shot-putted than threw the ball on his first lob. We worked on throwing mechanics, foot placement, and following through. We also practiced putting on the glove correctly, catching with two hands, and not being afraid of the ball. Then we let loose and had a nice catch. The kid has a cannon for an arm and isn't bad at catching either. Incidentally, baseball is going to be starting this week, and I wonder if I can get the kid to sit and watch a game with me on TV.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
