What I'm watching today
The Vast of Night (2020, Amazon Prime streaming) - Without question, this is my current favorite movie of the year. Imagine if Close Encounters of the Third Kind was an episode of Twilight Zone. In the 1950s at the height of the Cold War in a small town in New Mexico, a switchboard operator hears an unusual sound cutting into the local radio broadcast. That discovery leads her and her friend, a radio DJ, on an 80-minute adventure to identify the source of the sound. The journey is pure cinematic feat, and includes a four-minute continuous tracking shot, one scene that is pitch black for an uncomfortable amount of time, and some out of this world special effects. I loved this movie, and I will probably watch it again to see if I can catch any small details that I missed the first time around. Oh, and did I mention that the station identifier for the radio station is WOTW? Awesome.
