Day 114: Rainbows and unicorns

Anyone who says that summertime fun in the backyard can't be all rainbows and unicorns has never had a giant inflatable unicorn sprinkler in their back yard. Buy the unicorn, and the rainbows appear for free.

What I'm watching today

The Invitation (2015, Netflix streaming) - This film stars Logan Marshall-Green as Will, who has been invited to a formal dinner party at the home of his ex-wife. The movie is a slow-burner, but it doesn't take long to realize that the dinner guests have been invited to dinner under false pretenses. Eventually it is revealed that Will and his ex-wife had a young son who died tragically and that they both have been working in different ways to overcome their grief. It's hard to talk about this movie too much without revealing any spoilers, so I won't. I'll just say that the finale is fulfilling.

Artemis Fowl (2020, Disney+ streaming) - I actually didn't watch this today, but I forgot to mention it last week when I did watch it. Bottom line: This movie is trash, one of the year's worst. It starts with the most unlikable protagonist, who is a 12yo a-hole. He is surrounded by a pretty good supporting cast, but the story is the most incomprehensible thing I have watched in a long time. There are fairies. There are dwarves. There are humans. There is magic. And there is an overwhelming desire to cash in on the success of Harry Potter without having any of the charm, wit, or purpose that the Harry Potter movies have (some of them anyway). Even more inconceivable is the way that this movie ends. No spoilers here, but this film ends as though it is going to be the first of many. Well, guess what. It's not.

We also now have a three-stall garage!

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
