Day 111: Slow day

What I'm watching today

The Floor is Lava (2020, Netflix streaming) - This is the latest in a long line of physical challenge-based gameshows--Double Dare, American Gladiators, Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, Wipeout, and now this. Unfortunately in addition to the fun activities playing out before the viewer on the screen, there is also never ending commentary by annoying host Rutledge Wood. But in spite of that, everything else about this show is fun. It's a good time watching people make bad decisions, overestimate their physical abilities, and, of course, faceplant.

What I'm reading today

Murder in the Court Room (2006, by John L. Young and Lyle James Slack) - I just finished this true-crime story about the murder of a sitting judge in the courtroom in 1954 in Warren, PA, my hometown. Growing up in Warren you learn from an early age that the Warren County Courthouse was the site of the only murder of a judge in his own courtroom in history (which is unfortunately no longer true). Typically historians and Warren residents tell the tale of an assassination in the courtroom of a helpless victim, but this book paints a different picture of the events leading up to, during, and after the shooting. It turns out that there is much more to the story, and I was interested to read about it. This isn't the best-written book out there, but it's probably the only book written on the subject.

What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
