What I'm watching today
Feel the Beat (2020, Netflix streaming) - Let me be clear: I like dance movies. I can Step It Up all day. This movie isn't Step It Up. This movie is about a small-town girl who apparently is an exceptional dancer (though the on-screen performances cast some doubt) who fails to achieve her dream in New York. Her problem though is that even though she can't land a gig dancing, she's still an arrogant a-hole, and in the first scene of the film, an act of selfishness on the way to her dream audition karmically ensures that "she'll never work in this town again." So she goes back to her hometown, and despite also being an asshole to everyone there, people still seem to like her. She then takes a volunteer gig coaching the local youth dance troupe and offers them constructive insights such as, "That didn't suck." Seriously though, this movie sucks. From the unlikable central character to the woefully improbable third act, this movie is straight trash. And the dancing isn't even that good.
Southern Survival (2020, Netflix streaming) - Have you never quite recovered from Mythbusters getting canceled? If so then here is the show for you. The good folks at BattlBox, the subscription-based survival products company, are now producing a series for Netflix that documents their stress testing of products. What does that mean, exactly? You can now watch them incinerate a campsite while they flame test fireproof clothing. You can watch them smash old cars as they test escape gear. But really it's just about watching them blow random stuff up. There's no real science behind it, just explosions.
