Day 99: Binge

What I'm watching today

Alone (2020, Netflix streaming) - I finished up with my binge of the latest season of Alone. If you're not familiar with the show, it is a wilderness survival competition in which ten individuals are allowed to select a limited number of supplies to help them survive in the wild indefinitely. They are inserted in a general area in relatively close proximity to each other (to keep the competition fair) but far enough away from each other that the likelihood of bumping into each other is very low. Competitors are responsible for filming their own experiences--there are no camera crews or producers that follow them around. The only human interaction they can expect to have is a regular medical check-up every few weeks to determine if they are fit to continue with the experience. This season took place in northern Canada about 70 miles from the Arctic Circle beginning in late September. Translation: Extreme cold. This season had some unique firsts (at least that I can remember), for example...
  • a contestant being dismissed following a routine medical check for losing too much weight
  • a contestant who killed a moose and harvested hundreds of pounds of meat nearly starving to death
  • a contestant beating a wild wolverine to death with an axe.
Of course the usual cliches were present this season also. Like,
  • a contestant burning their shelter to the ground
  • a contestant eating bad rodent meat and puking for days
  • a contestant giving a lecture on knife safety accidentally cutting their hand all the way down to the bone.
Regardless, I love this show, and I will watch next season if/when it comes out.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
