Day 101: The half of what?

We had our first tornado warning of the summer today. That's a big problem with Colorado; every afternoon in the summer around 5pm it thunderstorms, and occasionally those thunderstorms can get pretty severe. And what follows basically amounts to a competition to see who can report a tornado sighting first. Inevitably the reports of a tornado in Black Forest or Falcon or Parker always get retracted, but that doesn't mean the storms are any less scary. Today we had pea-sized hail, which doesn't sound that bad, but then when I also tell you that kids were sledding in the park afterward because we had so much pea-sized hail, then it sounds a little more severe. Where we live sits very close to the Palmer Divide, which is the geographical feature that divides northern CO from southern CO. So during one of these storms we can look out one window and see black clouds, ice falling from the sky, lightning, swirling winds and the like, and out another window we can see a beautiful summer day. Fortunately it's still Colorado, and we have the mountains that provide our early-warning weather alerts. Whatever is happening over on Pikes Peak or Blodgett Peak or Cheyenne Mountain will be happening here in the next 20 minutes, so take cover. Seriously, there is no reason to ever be surprised by a weather event living this close to the Front Range.

What I'm watching today

The Half of It (2020, Netflix streaming) - I thought this was an enjoyable coming-of-age teen angst adolescent love triangle story, wrapped up in a brilliant soundtrack. The main character is your typical Asian high school senior overachieving outcast girl-who-can-do-anything protagonist, who also happens to be gay. She is enlisted by your typical dumb jock (who will surprise you for being a sweetheart) to write love letters to his secret crush, and happens to be not gay. The third vertex in the triangle is your typical high school senior popular homecoming queen who is beautiful and thoughtful and flawless (and secretly deep). Her sexuality is unknown. But there is your plot. See if you can guess who falls in love with whom.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
