Day 72: The Great Coloradan Baking Show

What I'm doing today

Shop vaccing - Some damn mice got into a bag of grass seed and wreaked havoc in my shed overnight. This afternoon when I went to get some tools out I discovered a disgusting pile of seeds and mouse droppings covering the floor. I don't even know how they got into the bag, because I inspected it over and over and couldn't even find a hole. Well, it's in a metal box now.

Grinding - I finally got around to cleaning up the goop on the sidewalk at the base of the new mailbox. I used a couple different wire brush attachments for the drill and ground the hardened stuff to powder. The sidewalk and surrounding area are still a little discolored, but it's now grey discoloration and not yellow blobs of snot. Does it look bad? Yes. Does it look less bad? Also yes. On a side note the mail carrier stopped by while I was out there and heaped a whole mess of kudos on me and my neighbor for the new mailbox, so I feel pretty good about that.

Baking - I was up into the wee hours baking a birthday cake for the 7yo. When asked what kind of birthday cake he wanted, he replied, "chocolate cake, with not-chocolate frosting." Because it was slim pickins at the grocery store, he got triple chocolate fudge cake with strawberry frosting. I've never made a layer cake before, and I have no formal training. Everything I know I learned from watching the Great British Baking Show, and I'm pretty sure their contestants aren't permitted to use Duncan Hines cake mixes.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
