Day 70: Lightning round

What I'm watching today

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994, Amazon Prime streaming) - This movie doesn't age well. Sure it's funny as hell, and Jim Carrey is amazing, but the humor of the film is based 75% on Jim Carrey's physical comedy and 25% in transphobia. Yes, it's a ridiculous movie, and the premise is dumb. But the way it takes the punchline to such an extreme would never be acceptable today. I was looking at the ratings for the movie and I noticed that they were far lower than I expected, and I presume that they are far lower than they would have been in 1994. It would be interesting to track the curve of this film's rating over time.

What I'm doing today

  • Returning - We piled into the car and returned the 7yo's school computer and other stuff that needed to be returned to the school.
  • Driving - I piled a bunch of old clothes into the car with the intention of dropping them off at a donation center. We visited three different centers and they were all closed due to COVID-19. I really didn't want to visit the main donation center (which is open) with the three kids in the car, so I will wait until another day.
  • Tagging - I wanted to go for a walk with the kids this morning, but they weren't having it. So we went to the park across the street for some calisthenics, wind sprints, and tag. At one point all three kids were it, and I wasn't. It was a heck of a workout.
  • Running - I mapped out a one-mile course that starts and ends at my house. There is an 80-foot climb in the first quarter mile, but after that it's not a bad course. I went for a jog this evening and finished by going all out for that last mile. It was unpleasant.
  • Tech-supporting - Mr. 7yo is turning 8 this week. One of his gifts is going to be a refurbished Chromebook along with his very own email address. I spent some time setting up the computer and dealing with Google account management to get things in order.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
