Day 48: May the Fourth be with you

What I'm watching today

Zombieland: Double Tap (2019, Starz streaming) - I wasn't particularly looking forward to this movie but, I do love zombie movies, and I needed to kill two hours. It wasn't bad, and it wasn't great, and in my list of 2019 movies it fell almost exactly in the middle. Woody Harrelson is great as Tallahassee, and Emma Stone who plays Wichita is always a treat. But the star of the show is Zoey Deutch who steals every scene she is in. The rest of the cast are also present. There is also a story, but it feels like it was written specifically to keep Abigail Breslin off camera for as long as possible. If you like zombie movies and have two hours to kill, go ahead. Otherwise, go read World War Z instead.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019, Disney+ streaming) - Well, I watched it again, and it didn't get any better. I did notice some exposition that I didn't catch the first time around that helps to explain the story, but, again, it doesn't really help that much more. The kids who have been begging to see the film for weeks, lost interest about half way through and wandered off to play video games. The quote of the day came when my wife turned to me and said, "This doesn't make any sense." So if you haven't seen it and you want to see it, rent a backhoe, dig the deepest hole you can, and then put your expectations down in it.

What I'm doing today

Phoning - I got my phone back. I was pleased with the work that UBreakIFix did. I was both excited and skeptical to see on the invoice that they also replaced the battery, because my battery was starting to go, but replacing one often has negative consequences. Sure enough the new battery seems to be draining at a similar rate as the old one, but I haven't measured it draining any faster.

Redecorating - Our master bedroom is basically a greenhouse in the summer and an igloo in the winter. This is partially because it's directly above the un-insulated garage and partially because of the massive bay window that faces due west. We use portable space heaters and air conditioners to keep it at a reasonable temperature. Today I put up additional curtain rods and hung some blackout curtains that I found in the closet. It hasn't been too warm today, so I can't say how effective they are. We shall see, as we use the room more and more when the little one arrives in a month.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
