Day 45: Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

Today started out great. We took a long walk and enjoyed the views, worked on the mailbox, pulled some weeds, dug some gravel, watched a classic movie, and got in a short workout, but then the day turned to crap. Always the optimist though, I zoom out and realize that a 90% good day is still a pretty good day.

What I'm watching today

The Princess Bride (1987, Disney+ streaming) What's not to love about this classic tale of adventure? Ok, it's not perfect, but it's still pretty great and ages well. And best of all, the kids had never seen it, so when Disney added it to Disney+ today, it was a no-brainer. They struggled a little to decipher Inigo's accent and Fezzik's mumbling, and the R.O.U.S. population was a little scary for the 5yo, but they all seemed to really enjoy the movie. And they now know where a lot of my pop culture references come from, so the next time I ask them, "Anybody want a peanut?" they'll know I'm not just being a random idiot.

What I'm doing today

Walking - We started the day with a brisk 2-mile walk through Mary Kyer Park, a fan favorite in our family. Masks donned, we finished the out-and-back in record time. When we left the car it was a tad bit chilly, but when we returned the temperature had already hit 80, and we all had sweaty faces. Despite the hot temps down here at 6600 feet, Pikes Peak is still snowcapped so the views were extra pretty today.

Protecting - The mailbox replacement is almost complete. For this latest stage, I slapped a coat of clear sealant onto the posts. This required a trip to Home Depot, which was shoulder-to-shoulder despite their limiting the number of customers in the store. I needed approximately three teaspoons of sealant to finish the job; I got a gallon. I also picked up a cheap-o cap for the top of the post. I really wanted something cool, like a solar powered cap that shoots vertical lasers that can be seen from space. The didn't have that. Plain metal cap it is. So I finished applying the sealant under the watchful eye of foreman 5yo, who thoroughly inspected the work once I was done.

Running? - I got the kids to bed fairly quickly, and decided to get a run in while there was still a hint of daylight. Everything started off great, and then I fell. Hard. I tripped on a low spot on the sidewalk were the concrete had been weathered away and only gravel and coarse sand was left--like what would happen if you dumped a bucket of road salt on the sidewalk and just left it there. Earned myself some skinned knees, but worst of all, I did a number on my phone. I tried to think fast as I was going down and toss my phone into the grass next to the sidewalk, but it was too late and the phone landed face down in the gravel right next to me. The screen is completely smashed, but it still works, miraculously. I suppose it would have been a lot worse if I had kept it in my hand and used it to break my fall instead of tossing it. So, now I'm adding "Get phone repaired" to my to-do list.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
