Day 44: The little things

It has occurred to me that I'm running out of fun projects to work on, and now I'm going to have to start working on the un-fun, tedious, and just plain crappy ones. Ugh. I guess I'm going to have some drywall, gutter, and tile work in my future. Will it be good to check those off the list and have the house be in that much better shape? Absolutely. Will I be happy while working on these projects? No, probably not.

What I'm watching today

The Platform (2020, Netflix streaming) - I watched this film, and it immediately shot into the #2 slot  in my movies of 2020 list after Onward.  That may change, however, as there is still an opportunity for Onward to slip after dozens of repeated viewings, and because The Platform is such a strong contender. What exactly is the platform? The movie is set in a tower (or pit) consisting of hundreds of floors of cells each occupied by up to two people. It's difficult to say whether the structure is a prison, a social experiment, or both. Each day a platform full of decadent gourmet food slowly descends to each floor so that the occupants may eat. Those on the upper floors gorge themselves. Those near the bottom starve to death. Our protagonist is a voluntary resident who very quickly goes from naive to hardened after witnessing first hand horrible events including murder and cannibalism. The primary conflict then concerns whether he will ultimately lose his humanity or rise above. The ending was both shocking and moving, but it's what bolted this movie almost to the top of my list.

What I'm doing today

Carwashing - The last time I had my car in for service, the dealership gave me a bunch of free car wash vouchers. Well, the kids needed to get out of the house, my car needed a wash, and it was free. So we drove downtown and got the car washed. Cool story, eh? Afterward we wanted to drive over by Cheyenne Mountain and do some exploring, but the skies looked like it was about to be Armageddon o'clock, so we rushed home instead.

Singing along - At 5PM, there was a nationwide sing-along of "Lean On Me" in honor of the first responders, medical workers, and essential workers. We sang along in the car, and by "we" I mean "I" since the kids had never heard that song before. Here's a fun fact: No one knows more than the first verse and the chorus of that song.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
