Day 40: No loafing

What I'm listening to today

Movie Crush (podcast) - This is my second favorite movie-related podcast (after How Did This Get Made?) Brought to you by the people behind the Stuff You Should Know brand, Movie Crush invites film industry actors, directors, producers, and crew members on to talk about their favorite movies. This particular episode focused on High Fidelity, one of my favorite movies.  Because of social distancing and the closure of studios, the "guest" for the episode was one of the show's own producers. However, it didn't matter, because the conversation was spot on, and so much was revealed about the movie that even I didn't know. And I've seen this film A LOT. (I'm also excited to learn about a zombie movie, Train to Busan, that they discussed and that I have not seen. More on that in a future posting.) Anyway, if you're into insightful discussions about all aspects of beloved movies, then this may be the podcast for you. One word of caution though: The conversations often can be very dry.

What I'm doing today

Plumbing -  I attempted to fix the leak in the sprinkler system that I discovered yesterday. Of course, the leak was under six inches of gravel and a layer of weed barrier adjacent to a retaining wall. So after digging up six inches of gravel, cutting a hole in the weed barrier, and removing an entire section of blocks from the retaining wall, I was able to get down to business. The problem was that a series of underground drip lines for the fruit trees had worked themselves loose where they were connected to the main line. Unfortunately the connections were so worn that there was no way to salvage them. I had to remove that section of the main line and replace it with a new section along with the drip line connections. All I needed were a couple of 1/2" hose couplings, and I didn't have any. Off to Home Depot! I hopped in the car and drove the two miles to Home Depot. As I pulled into the parking lot I saw the line go get in was stretched the whole length of the building and into the parking lot. It didn't seem worth it for $2.00 worth of couplings, so I pulled a U-turn and headed over to Lowes. At Lowes I got right in, grabbed the parts (and a new utility knife, because I'm constantly misplacing them) and was out the door in minutes. The 5yo was waiting for me when I got home and we finished the repair and tested it together.

Loafing -  I had 3lbs of ground turkey in the fridge that was approaching the expiration date. You know what that means: Meatloaf for days! I found some random recipe online, but unfortunately I didn't have any breadcrumbs. Not to worry, a quick search of the pantry yielded some rosemary garlic crackers that I had fun smashing into tiny breadcrumb substitutes. I must say that the meatloaf turned out great, and I had enough ingredients to make two very large loaves.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
