Day 36: Happy Earth Day!

It's Earth Day! Pollution and airborne particulate levels are lower than they have been in years. And all it took was a deadly virus to force people out of their cars. Hooray?

What I'm watching today

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Netflix streaming) - I honestly don't know how to think about this movie. Sure, it's a retelling of a Greek tragedy so it dips into the realm of the surreal, but still. The story involves a heart surgeon who was negligent during a surgery years ago and accidentally killed a patient. The patient's son returned and befriended the surgeon, but soon afterward the surgeon's two children fall ill. The surgeon is told that he must decide which family member will die, or else his entire family will. As a parent, I expected the movie to end in a certain way, but I was wrong.

What I'm playing today

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020, Nintendo Switch) - Ok, I caved. I'm not serious about this game, but it's just the box-checking, achievement-hunting kind of game that I often enjoy. I start the game; I accrue debt. I build a house; I accrue debt. I pay off that debt; I accrue more debt. This is the game of Life, except that there are personified animals and lots of puns.

What I'm doing today

Biking - We got up early today, packed all the bikes in the car, and found a deserted parking lot to ride in. All of the kids are still either on training wheels or riding trikes. Even the 7yo still uses training wheels. He wants to ride a bike; he just doesn't want to put in the time to learn how. The 5yo on the other hand just needs to get over her fear of falling and she'll be fine. And the 3yo is just plain crazy, which means he'll probably be the first kid to ditch the training wheels.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
