Day 34: Movies and stuff

What I'm watching today

Code 8 (2019, Netflix streaming) - It's a cool concept, one where people with superpowers walk among us, but are regulated by the government so much as to almost have zero rights as Americans. Honestly, all of these Netflix-produced sci-fi films just kind of run together and are indistinguishable from each other. I'm trying to remember what this movie reminds me of...oh right: EVERY X-MEN MOVIE. There were some things I did like about this movie, namely the mutant-hunting robots. They had an interesting design, and they weren't indestructible, which was refreshing. I mainly had two issues with the plot. 1) The mutants or people with powers or whatever we're calling them seem to live in constant fear of the police, but nearly every time we see them confronted by the police, the mutants mop the floor with the cops. 2) The main character falls in with a group engaged in organized crime, but the guy who recruits him treats him more like a little brother than a tool to be exploited, chewed up and spit out. At any rate, I thought it was interesting how the mutants were categorized, which was used as a plot point, and the special effects surprisingly were pretty good. Overall, not a bad movie, but I'm sure a year from now if someone asks me about Code 8, I'll probably remember a different Netflix movie.

What I'm doing today

Rewiring - While cleaning the 5yo's room this morning, we went to plug in the vacuum and the wall receptacle moved at least 3/4". Well, that's not safe, and you know what that means! Time to replace these 40yo outlets! Many of the fixtures in this house are the originals. For example, we just had our ancient garage door replaced a few months ago, I replaced a lot of the sprinkler system last summer, and I've been slowly replacing the outdated electrical outlets and switches. So today we replaced a switch and three receptacles (including a switched receptacle). Fortunately I had help!

Listing - One of my coworkers reviews movies online, and I enjoy debating the merits of various movies with him. Lately we've been comparing movie lists, and I realized that I hadn't been documenting my lists very well. So I made a list on this blog to keep track. Feel free to debate me.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
