Day 32: Natalis Laetus

Let's take a moment to pause from our regularly scheduled programming to honor a very special person: my wife.

Today is my wife's somethingth birthday, and I am extremely lucky to have her. In addition to being the mother of our three-and-a-half children and my partner in crime for over 10 years, she's also a nurse, which means that a substantial population in the states of Maryland and Colorado owes her their lives. This quarantine thing has made it tough to give her the birthday that she deserves, but we did our best with slightly frozen-around-the-edges flowers, a homemade* cake, and donuts for breakfast, plus a lot of leisurely relaxing.

A lot of folks don't know that she's also a student, earning credits toward a masters degree while working full-time and also pregnant. I don't know anyone else with a strong enough back or the will to take on so much while still having the drive to come home and be a great mom. And did I mention that there's a global pandemic happening right now? So not only is she saving her patients' lives, but she's also protecting her own family. How's that for courage?

I hope that she felt appreciated and loved on this nth birthday, because she is. There are a 3yo, 5yo, 7yo, and 42yo at home who want to spend every minute with her when she's here and miss her when she's at work. Happy birthday, Jenny!

* It was Halloween Funfetti cake with red icing. Who knew that cake mix is something that no stores would have in stock.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
