Day 27: What do April blizzards bring?

Tulips
It's very difficult to tiptoe through the tulips when the tulips are covered with five inches of snow. Yes, it's the day after Easter and here in Colorado Springs it's been snowing for over 24 hours straight. Unfortunately for the 7yo, there's no such thing as a homeschool snow day. Needless to say, there wasn't a lot going on outside today, and with both cars snug in the garage, there wasn't anything to do in there either.

What I'm watching today

Parasite (2019, Hulu streaming) - This film won the Oscar for best picture a few months ago, and I  have to agree with that. Of the nominees that I've seen so far (Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, The Irishman, Joker, and 1917), only 1917 comes close. This is a Korean language film, so there are subtitles. I was warned ahead of watching it that the subtitles come at you pretty fast, but I thought the tempo was fine. The movie focuses on a poor family that cons their way into working for a very wealthy family. As a result, they climb their way out of poverty, but not all the way out. Eventually they make a series of bad decisions that culminate in a shocking ending that I thought was a little rushed, but I didn't see it coming. The movie makes you question the concepts of good and morality when applied to people who have no choice but to do anything they can to survive, and this theme is perfectly encapsulated by the line "They're nice because they're rich," which implies that the poor can't afford to be nice. The real question is Who is the parasite? The brilliance of this movie is that there may not be a wrong answer.

What I'm playing today

Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990, Nintendo Switch) - This game was a staple of my pre-teen years, and I can recall challenging myself to see how quickly I could play through the game from start to finish. Now it's 30 years later, and I picked this game up again. Much of the knowledge of the game has somehow stuck in my brain after all these years, and it has been fun showing the 7yo some of its secrets. However, the muscle memory is long gone, and I am no longer able to make my hands do what my brain is trying to tell them to do. I played through most of the first three worlds--no warps here, folks--and some of the levels were downright infuriating. Was it still fun though? Of course it was! This game is a timeless classic, and it isn't the third best selling Nintendo Entertainment System game of all time for nothing.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
