Day 2: First Day of Spring

How often can I use the phrase "in true Colorado fashion?"

Today is the first day of Spring. Apparently the 4+ inches of snow that have fallen on Colorado Springs didn't get the memo. If we weren't trapped inside before, we are now.  Unfortunately a lot of things on my to-do list are outdoor things.

So far, the highlight of the day came at around 3:45 PM when the 5yo yelled from the bathroom, "Daddy, come look at my poop! It looks like a tiny little brown fishy!" We'll see what the rest of the day has in store, but I expect it will involve a lot of streaming video.

What I'm watching today

Raising Arizona (1987, HBO Now streaming) This is quintessential Coen Brothers right here. I hadn't seen this movie in over 30 years and had been wanting to revisit it lately, so I was excited to find out that it was recently added to HBO Now. Watching this movie is a hoot. It's fun to try to identify all the films that came afterward that were influenced by this one. I was able to pick out some of the obvious ones: Ace Ventura, Forrest Gump, The Hangover, just to name a few.

What I'm listening to today

Healer (2020, by Grouplove) Grouplove's fourth full-length studio album Healer was released last week, and I finally got around to experiencing it today. While the lead-off track "Deleter" has been killing it on alternative and alt-rock radio, this album is still a far cry from the greatness of the band's  2011 debut album Never Trust a Happy Song. This album feels like the band is trying to drift from the alternative sphere of influence toward a more dancey popular crowd...but doesn't quite know how to get there. In fact, as I listen to several tracks I hear glimmers of alt-rock stalwart Arcade Fire's 2017 release Everything Now, which was filled with poppy goodness (if you ignore a handful of complete misfires in the heart of the album). Healer on the other hand starts strong and immediately settles into mediocrity. There are a few flickers along the way, but for the most part they are only missed opportunities to have done something more. I still love Grouplove though, and I will wait with restrained anticipation for album #5.

What I'm doing today

Being meta - It occurred to me this morning that I have all these things I need to get done, but I didn't have an actual list. So I made a list. As you can see, I cheated a little and put things on there that I did yesterday. But I'm stuck indoors, so I'm taking the win. That's progress. Tomorrow I'll type it into Google Keep. That'll be more progress.

Parent teacher conference - My wife and I had a phone conference with 7yo's teacher this morning. We were a little unnerved to spot a failing grade on his report card, but she assured us that it was "of course" a typo.

Accounting - Contrary to my libertarian friend's beliefs, the US Census is not unconstitutional. It's right in there in Article I, Section 2. So, I filled out my 2020 Census questionnaire today. You're welcome, America.

Of course I'm also doing things around the house just to help keep it in order. You know, things like parenting, laundry, cooking, dishes, cleaning, shoveling snow, and blogging. The blogging doesn't really help to keep the house in order, but it does help me organize my thoughts and keep me on track during the day. Perhaps I might try this approach when I return work, whenever that might be. Also, maybe tomorrow I'll try working out again. Baby steps.

Day 91: Cleanliness

73. ✅  Clear out the flower bed in the front yard Two words: scorched earth. Garden hoe: loosen the dirt. (Broke that hoe.) Shovel: remove the dirt. Sieve: Filter out all the crap in the dirt. What was left was a smooth patch of barren soil. I'm sure there are undesirables lurking beneath the surface, so I'll let it lie for a few days before I do anything else with it. 51.  ✅  Deal with the shred pile This took days. I've been accumulating junk mail, old bills, and literally anything with my name, a family member's name, or our address on it for several months resulting in a two-foot tall stack of papers. It couldn't be done all at once, because (A) the shredder kept overheating, and (B) I kept running out of places to store the shreds. (They take up considerably more room than the unshredded sheets of paper.) 75  ✅  Clean off the workbench Getting rid of the shred pile was the main roadblock in completing this task, but it's done. And now there's a bike up ...
