Tomorrow is the first day of Spring, and in true Colorado fashion we're supposed to have a heinous winter storm then. But today, on the other hand, is gorgeous, and we are all taking advantage of the nice weather. The kids have been exiled to the backyard, and I plan on getting a few things done around the yard today. I'm also supposed to be looking into my 7yo's e-Learning or distance-learning or whatever-they're-calling-it-learning curricula today, but we'll see.
What I'm watching today
Ok, before you get all indignant about sitting around and watching TV and movies when I should be productive, keep in mind that I have a lot of kids. This means that I don't get to see a lot of movies or TV in a timely fashion. Last year I saw a total of three movies in the theater, and two of those were kids movies. So when you really think about it, seeing a movie is an accomplishment.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010, Netflix streaming) This movie landed pretty high on my top movies of the decade list, and it's one of those films that is a default pick when I'm indecisive about what to watch. Is it a movie? Is it a comic book? Is it a video game? Yes, and it's fantastic. I had this on in the background while washing dishes and folding laundry this morning, which made the dishes and the laundry take way longer to finish than they should have. The titular character is a giant turd, but he's surrounded by tons of amazing over-the-top characters played perfectly by great actors all around.
Mr. Right (2015, Netflix streaming) Never heard of this movie before, and for some reason I thought it was a brand new Netflix original. Turns out it's a few years old. Doesn't matter. It has Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick in it, so obviously I'm in. I thought it was enjoyable enough. It's full of plot holes, but who cares? Anna Kendrick does crazy pretty well, and Sam Rockwell is Sam Rockwell. This is the type of movie which, if it had been made in 2005 instead of 2015, would have probably starred actors like Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher and definitely would have been a much crappier movie.
What I'm reading today
Annihilation (2014, by Jeff VanderMeer) I found this book in a pile of junk on the "free stuff" table at work a few months ago. I loved loved loved the movie starring Natalie Portman, so I decided to give it a go. I don't know if I like or dislike the book yet, and I've had several starts and stops while trying to read it over the past couple weeks. The way the author writes is just...strange. I have just as many WTF moments over how the author describes the oddities in the book as the oddities themselves.
What I'm doing today

| I've seen it. |
Subaru Service - Well, I've had the Forester now for three whole months, which means it's time for that inaugural oil change. I already have over 6,000 miles on the thing--driving from Colorado Springs to Aurora every day will do that. Fortunately I bought lifetime oil changes from the dealer, which should become "free" in about 9 months. Good deal. They removed a nail from my tire and repaired that, and they were also kind enough to point out that my windshield has a crack in it.
Yard work - My dog and my neighbors' massive cottonwood and pine trees ensure that there is never a shortage of debris to pick up in the back yard. I filled up my 96-gallon bin with sticks, leaves, pine cones, and poop. That should last at least a day.
Paved walkway repair - The last time Comcast came out to run a line under my yard, they managed to create a giant sinkhole underneath my paved walkway. I dug up all the pavers, re-leveled the base, and relaid the pavers again. It struck me this evening that I should be doing before-and-after photos when I fix something, but it's too late and too dark outside now.
Whatever learning - I eventually got around to logging into my 7yo's school account. It took me a hot minute, because the online system his school is using is pretty bad, and the instructions for logging in weren't much better. Eventually I was able to download a "work packet" which was really just a bunch of St. Patrick-themed mazes and word searches with some math exercises sprinkled in here and there. There was also some stuff in there about the "history" of St. Patrick that was pretty much nonsense. The "snakes" were Pagans, people. Look it up!
