The novel coronavirus is in our midst, and Colorado has suffered its first COVID-19-related casualty. My employer finally decided to respond to the workforce's concerns by implementing a confusing shiftwork scheme that probably will have little or no impact on preserving the health of people like me who work in an open office environment surrounded by other people. If you remove a fraction of the people, you're still surrounded by people. So, eh...
Because I have a chronic health condition I was given the option to go on administrative leave indefinitely. I have three kids and a pregnant wife at home. If I can remove one possible infection vector from my household, I'm going to jump at the chance. All I had to do was make a sworn statement that my health concerns are accurate and truthful, and I was on my way home.
The purpose of this blog is to help keep my sanity intact by ensuring that I remain productive during my time away from work. If I skip a day, or post a day with very little accomplished, well, then feel free to publicly shame me in the comments. I plan on taking full advantage of this time.
Will I be missed at work? Sure, I have friends there, and I'm in contact with them through online chat and SMS. But now is the time when we learn how much of an impact I truly make when I'm at my desk. Some of my coworkers are confused as to why I was given administrative leave. I'm not shy about discussing my health concerns, but I also don't broadcast them. At the very least, I take comfort in knowing that whatever happens I'll still have a job to go back to when this all eventually ends. The question is: Will it be the same job?
Oh, today is St. Patrick's Day? Like we all need another excuse to drink.
